How to Write a Book, Part 5

I survived the week that was!

Now, back to the subject at hand.

Giving interest and texture to your story is how the story is fleshed out. Having focus makes the story purposeful, but the gifted story teller uses suspense and foreshadowing and other techniques to draw out a story and build anticiption and make the resolution more satisfying.

Characterization gives you people to care about in the story. Without well developed characters no one will be carried along to the story’s end.

But both these are the really a matter of feel. And feel comes with practice. You’ve got to tell stories, and a lot of them, to get the feel you need for these things.

More thoughts tomorrow!
