Welcome, 8th graders from CCS! Get ready for some interesting conversation with Morty! You will be receiving your first blogging assignment this week. 🙂

  2. tonyasquilts Says:

And…thank you, Morty, for your willingness to take us through this process. We are already so enjoying your book! We are reading through Chapter 5 by Monday. (Just so you know where we’re all at.)

  3. cuddlesshadow Says:

hi this is cuddlesshadow im enjoying the book right now

  4. calie22 Says:

HI!this is calie22 and the purlioned boy is great so far!!!!!!!

  5. chuckdownfield Says:

Hi i’m Chuck! I just wanted to know, how did you get the title for your book?

  6. 1alkat Says:

    HI Mortimus,

I’m kind of confused about the second chapter when Trevor is going to bed and he gets beat up. Who beat him up or what happened I don’t understand that part. I was hoping you could explain it to me.

  7. tigerlilly7 Says:

hi im tigerlilly and what I think about this book is its very magical, mysterious, and it talks alot about dreams.

  8. Mortimus Says:

Thanks for the thoughts, everyone. Glad you’re enjoying the book!

The title took a long time to come to. Initially I wanted to call it “Trevor Upjohn and the Hole in the Sky” but that sounded too “Harry Potteresque” so after many different titles I finally settled on “The Purloined Boy” because of its vague resemblence to “tenderloin” and because of Edgar Alan Poe’s “The Purloined Letter.”

The identity of his attackers are the guys who’ve been threatening him — Meno and Willis. There is one other, but I won’t tell you who he is yet. I think you’ll find out much later in the story.

  9. godzillagirl Says:

Hi! I’m a little late on the action I see!
My name is godzillagirl, and I’m luvin’ this book so far.
But I do have one Question. I’ve read through Chap.5, and I was wondering, what do the bogeymen get with their little passes they get from bringing in Trevor?
    Hope to ttyl.

P.S. I LUV the way U chose the title !

  10. Mortimus Says:

    Good name!

Why, they get their portions! Of course, the royal court has first dibbs. I think Sabnock has been eyeing Trevor’s legs.

  11. cuddlesshadow Says:

wondering how did u think about this book its very interesting ttyl!

  12. godzillagirl Says:

Why does the mouse glow? His name totally slipped my mind!!

  13. Mortimus Says:

A lot of thought went into the book over several years. I will say though that the basic idea came very quickly — in a flash you might say.

Zephyr is his name. He glows because he comes from a place where everyone glows, you could say.

  14. hyesun815 Says:

    Hi!! my name is hyesun815

I love this book!! I am enjoying the book

I like the title that you chose.

I think this book is very interesting

  15. mackjames777 Says:

hey everyone im mackjames77 the first chapter but it is geting alot better i realy hope u get this book published

  16. mackjames777 Says:

my bad i meant to say the first chapter was not so good

  17. Mortimus Says:

Thanks for the notes. I’m glad you’re enjoying the book. It will be published next year. I’m hoping it will be out by April 2008.

I saw that you you didn’t like the first chapter too much. I’d like to know why so tht I can improve it. What didn’t you like?

  18. mackjames777 Says:

i didnt like it so much because i didnt get how “i want to go home” and why they needed a theripy my bad i know thats spelt wrong.
But it go better when i figuer out why they cant say that because he was stolein which mad the frst chapter not so bad.

  19. cuddlesshadow Says:

why do u think trevor lost his power when he took his eyes off zephyer

  20. cuddlesshadow Says:

    u know the glowing mouse

  21. cuddlesshadow Says:

mackjames they thaught home was a bad word because they werent suppose to know about home

  22. godzillagirl Says:

For a reply to cuddlesshadow, I think he lost the power because he stopped focusing on Zephyer. And Zephyer was giving him “the power”.

And mackjames, they were not only not supposed to know about home, but if other children heard about home, they might remember their home. And then the gaurdians would have trouble. The kids would probably rebel.

  23. godzillagirl Says:

Do U think U would have been able to keep U’r eyes on Zephyer for as long as Trevor did?
I personally think I wouldn’t have as much self control as Trevor did.

  24. Mortimus Says:

    Hello Guys,

    Very good thoughts.

Yes, you’re right about why the Guardians and the Behavior Modifiers forbid words like “home” and “parents” — they’re afraid the children will begin remembering where they’re from.

You’re right about Trevor keeping his eyes on Zephyr too. That would be very difficult. But isn’t that a lot like life? Isn’t doing the right thing always difficult?

  25. calie22 Says:

What do you think about Olton? it’s better than Superbia but this is where the
Bogeymen get their chidren to eat.

  26. calie22 Says:

    hey Godzillagirl
I woul totally NOT be able to keep my eyes oc Zephyr
i just don’t have that kind of consentrastion!

  27. calie22 Says:

    dear Morty
I was wondering on page 54, last paragraph it says,
“just a few hours ago Trevor would have crawled back into his cell and tried to squeeze back into his cell.”
what does that mean? I’m confused <:)

  28. calie22 Says:

    i’m done with chapter eleven

  29. godzillagirl Says:

Ok, Cali it took me 10 minets to remember where and what Olton was.
If any of U were as confused as me, U can get U’r memory jogged on pg.76, there might be stuff before that though.
I would LOVE to go and be in the market! FOOD! FOOD!
My mouth was watering after I read that. Stop torturing the girl who loves food!!!
Also in the kitchen I had the same dillema.
And I don’t think they were getting food when they took the kid from the croud. When I saw that, I thought of the old “The Hobbit” cartoons with the orcs leading the slaves and singing “where there’s a wip theres a way” sorry, I shouldn’t have gone into that.
It must be scary to be in the croud with that happing. Aaaaaaaaa!

  30. godzillagirl Says:

In the last one I mean t to say “happining” there I feel better.
Now, to my seed. When I read about Maggie in the early chapters, I had a suspition she was really old or something like that, and was scouting out to find kids who were like Trevor.
Now, what were U thinking in the early chapters!
[I like what it really was better]
I thought it was funny when the girl said Trevor was cute! And Maggie blushed, aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaawwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!!! How sweet!
I wonder how Trevor feels about Maggie [does he really have a crush on her?] Sorry this is so long! I’ve got lots to talk about in only 2 blogs!!

  31. Mortimus Says:

Sounds like you’re making good progress.

To your question, Trevor is changing, becoming someone who can do things he never would have dreamed doing before the story began. His old self would have been too frightened to follow Zephyr.

Why is he changing though? What’s going on? Do you have any ideas?

  32. Mortimus Says:

There will be a whole lot more of Maggie in the chapters to come. In a way you could say the story is as much Maggie’s story as it is Trevor’s.

In the final version of the first book there are a couple of chapters that are not in the version you have. In those you get to see things from Maggie’s perspective.

  33. tonyasquilts Says:

    7th Grade Class,

You are doing a great job with your blogging! Remember that by Monday rolls around, you should have blogged at least one “discussion seed,” and you should have responded to at least one seed of someone else’s. Everyone should also have read through Chapter 11 by Monday.

Does anyone have any predictions they would like to make? I’ve enjoyed reading some of your life connections…remember what we’ve learned about in our Daybooks? Many of you are making connections; that is a sign of a good reader!

I am hoping to get Morty to come visit us while we’re approaching the middle of the book. (And then, of course, we’ll have to have him visit us at the end, too!)

    Read on!!

    < Mrs. Snyder

  34. tonyasquilts Says:

Oops! Cuddlesshadow noticed I mistakenly said that you had to read through Chapter 11 by Monday. That is a mistake; you are to have read through Chapter 11 by Wednesday. I’m sorry if I scared you!!

  35. kiwijojo Says:

Hey dudes, I totally love this book. This is my second favorite book in the whole world,(mabe even my favorite book) and I love a lot of books. Mortimus, you are the best writer in the world. I love the way you make the story sound real!!!! This is a very interesting book and I love it i hope that you write plenty more books! I love to write stories and i hope that I can be as good of a writer as you. Keep writing and keep lovin’ to entertain kids!

  36. kiwijojo Says:

Calie, I have not finnished my reading yet so I do not know what Olton is really like but I thik that it is still WAY better because at least you live a better life than in “super”bia!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  37. tigerlilly7 Says:

Why do you think that Trevor was stolen?

  38. tigerlilly7 Says:

Dear godzillagirl the mouse glows because it has special power to get through small places.

  39. 1alkat Says:

Hey everyone, I was wondering if you could explain the part where trevor was ditched by Zephyr and was left by lots of doors to go to…Oh it just slipped my mind. Well i’ll just explain the place umm the place were Trevor met Maggie and her Uncle. Anyways what happened when Trevor FINALY got in the doors were the doors tiny or big? I picture the doors as tiny little holes and with doors that open and close from the top and bottom u see where Im going???

  40. 1alkat Says:

Hey Godzilla girl just adding on to your seed about Maggie and Trevor. I think they really like each other and they act like it but they won’t admit it.

  41. Mortimus Says:

    Gosh! Thanks.

Trevor was stolen for the same reason all the children were stolen, because bogey’s think they’re yummy!

The doors, if you recall, are double doors that swing outward. They about as wide as a man’s arms extended measuring from finger-tip to finger-tip. They’re not very tall though. A grown man would have to bend over to get through one of them.

  42. hyesun815 Says:

it’s very fun to do blog!

i want to know what is basme ?

I think it’s kind of jam, but i’m not sure~

Who is Max?? I think he is good person,

and I think Maggie likes Trevor!!!

  43. chuckdownfield Says:

What Do you all think about Molech, is he human, an evil blob, bogeyman or guardian?

  44. hyesun815 Says:

I think Trevor was stolen. I think bogeyman stolen him because, they want to eat him!!

and also, he didn’t live with her family~

  45. chuckdownfield Says:

Hyesun815, I think that basme is like a cream/oil. Maggie I certainly belive does like trevor because he is”special”.

  46. 1alkat Says:

Chapter 8 reminds me of two movies/books the first one is “Willy Wonka and the Chocoate Factory” because of the doors he got all lost and the second one is “Pinochio” becuse of the food and the village it all comes together.

  47. cuddlesshadow Says:

    readers respose journal chap. 10

i think its cool that maggie showed trevor around . what do u think will happenb when trevor has to speak infront of all those people. do u think that there are other children in superbia that trevor knows. why do u think that boy cant be a fisher but maggie can. is sam naggies brother. how long will trevor be there. a long time or short. who knows?!

  48. cuddlesshadow Says:

ps isnt that cool that basme is made from s tree!!!

  49. cuddlesshadow Says:

morty i have a ? is abagails maggies name or not

  50. cuddlesshadow Says:

    respose journsl chsp. 11

what so you think about the fruit being able to let other people here other peoples thaught. i think its cool. i think the fruit is like the bible it connects christian sas one. we might not be able to speak to each others minds but we can share it with words from are mouth.

  51. kiwijojo Says:

What do you think was happening in chapter 8 with the little boys? Do you think that the boys were also run-aways? Do you think that they were all not run-aways but instead they were just mistaken by the bogey men as a run-away? I think that they were mostly run-aways and the last one was just mistaken as one! I hope that Trevor does not get cought even if he escapes again because he will still have the memory!

(I have not read chapter 9 yet)

  52. 1alkat Says:

Chapter 10 is my all time favorite chapter in the book so far. I like when trevor meets Maggies mother ( At least I think it’s her mother) well anyways, I picture her really tall with long beautiful blonde hair. I guess Maggie wasn’t lying that she had eggs( Well Meno thought so). I can hardly wait to read chapter 11 and find out what’s going to happen to trevor at the banquet. My prediction is that when Trevor goes up to read he’s gonna go up there look at all the people take a deep breath and start reading, get all choked up on the embarrassing parts and run off into his room. At least that’s what I would do.

  53. kiwijojo Says:

    chapter 9,
Hey, I wonder who Maggie really is! I think that she is a girl who works to save kids like Zephyr does. I also think that she puposely came to superbia and that is why she has her grandfather and uncle with her. When is Trevor going to ask her who she really is? I think tat he will ask quite soon! (what are reeds?,a question for mortimus) Why is he seeing things? Is it an effect that the basme gave him? Mabe at the beggining wene it says that he sees thins that most people do not see this is what they were refferring to! I wnder about the tree! Why is it in the paintings? Why does it make him feel warm inside? I JUST HAD A BRAIN SPARK, I WONDER IF MAGGIE IS TREVORS SISTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!BOY, AM I BRILLIANT OR WHAT? Of course I am probably wronge!
(most of my quetions are not ment to be answered)

  54. kiwijojo Says:

I like your predictions Alli, I mean “1alkat” hee, hee, hee,

  55. kiwijojo Says:

Is Zephyr’s glow the same as the fruit on the tree’s glow?

  56. calie22 Says:

I bet Trevor was freked out when he woke up and fond out that everyone knew his name and medical conditions and everything. also why was Maggie asleep too?they were talking about these paintings and now I want to see one of them!Do you think that superbia is going to find out about all the people that help the kids escape(including Zepryr).I hope they don’t.

  57. calie22 Says:

SORRY That’s supposed to be capter 9

  58. calie22 Says:

SUN EATERS that’s a cool name!!!!!
Now are all the people there waering robes or is it just the new kids? Giles does seem nice and I wonder what those Popovers tate like. :.) I like that they have
FREE TIME too. Is there fish falling from the treeor do they get that somewhere else?

  59. vena003 Says:

i wonder when zephyr is going to come back to help trevor

  60. vena003 Says:

    RESPONDING TO kiwijojo:

i think that zephyr does have the same glow as the tree. i think that he’s using that glow to
help the kids be more brave and more willing to escape.

  61. Mortimus Says:

    Hi Yall,

Great being with you in class today. I’m glad you’re enjoying the book!

    Keep those questions coming!

  62. angel356 Says:

Hi, I was wondering since Zephyr is so tiny and has so many powers does he ever get week or tired from useing all of them?

  63. angel356 Says:

In chapter 7 to me the black figure looked like a dark shadow with fog around it, as it talked no movement came from a mouth but you heard it’s deep thunderous voise pounding agensed your ears as you try to think.

  64. calie22 Says:

    Daer, Mortimus,
THANk YOU Soooooooooooo much for coming to our class!!!!!!!!!!!!

  65. angel356 Says:

I don’t think that Molech is a bogeyman. Since nowone has ever seen him I think he might be something very powerful like Zephyr but uses his power for evil insted of good.

Or maby he’s the shadow in chapter 7 since the bogeymen only call him Lord. ( I dought the bogeymen even know his real name) The bogeymen probley just don’t know it’s Molech because he doesn’t want anyone to know who he is.

  66. angel356 Says:

    Dear Morty,

Do any of the charecters in the book betray Trever not incuding the bogymen or guardians? I think it would be prety exiting if that happend espeshaly if it was someone he trusted.

  67. Mortimus Says:

Zephyr does get tired sometimes, but we don’t get to see that in this story.

Concerning Molech: Molech and Gorgon will have their stories told soon, just wait and all your questions about them will be answered.

  68. angel356 Says:

In chapter 8 I think that since there are bogeymen in Olton Trever might get cought or the people might get suspisios about him.

  69. tonyasquilts Says:

Wow! You guys have had some great questions, thoughts, and predictions!! I have loved reading your response journals, too!

  70. angel356 Says:

In the beginning of the chapter Zyper had left Trever in front of a town called Olton. Zyper had left him there to rest because he used to much of the ointment and was geting weaker by the second. (sorry don’t have book I forgot what ointment was called) The problem was that there was a big wall with lots of doors but there were no handles on the out side of the doors. Then a man opened a door so Trever ran to it as fast as he could but when he got there the door was shut. Then another door opened so Trever ran to that door but it also shut when he got there. Trever thought for a moment then relised that the man was probley opening all of the doors. He then ran to a random door and he was wright. The door then opened and he saw the man he had seen at the other doors. The man woulden’t let Trever in then all of a suden he saw Maggie behind the man. She told the man that Trever was her freind then He let Trever in. Maggie introdused Trever to her uncle and then they started to walk up the hill.

  71. angel356 Says:

In this chapter, I think that since the tree comes from a different place were light is always shining and it takes from the future that this other world might be heaven. I also think that Zyper and the tree come from the same world since they both glow.

  72. godzillagirl Says:

Well, I’ve been gone for a while. Sorry ’bout that.
What Chuck said about Molech being a blob. That would be intresting, a giant black blob taking over the world. [ooops didn’t mean for that to jump out!!!] SOQ [I mean] LOL. And it was totally Star Wars, you were right. To me, ’cause when the story[about Gorgon] was being told, I thought of Episode III, when Anikin was hearing the story about the really wise guy from To-Be Emp. Palpitine. For a sec. there, I was wondering if Icabod had killed him for something funky like that.

After finishing Chapter 17, I think my earleir prediction that I never mentioned was correct. What is it? That Paracelsus is bad cheese [in other words, up to no good]

angel[whatevernumberyouare] to me, there is totally no way that the tree cam from heaven.
The Pig is awesome. Now, I’m curios, is it like an old age bouncy ball???

M.C. I luv how this book is coming!!! Its exactly the kinda book I like to read. [I’m dying to read ahead. But I’m not. Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight!!!]

  73. godzillagirl Says:

    Oh, and by the way??

    Evil Santa? Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!
    Okay I’m done.

I’ll get back 2 U guys later. I’ve got to go cry in my room.

  74. angel356 Says:

    Hi Morty

I just wanted to say that the pig ball in Chapter 16 might be of great power. I think it might have something to do with the ward. I also think that Paracelsus might be evil and working for King Molech. I do not know what Gorgon did to Meno and his friends to make them so cheerful because I don’t think it was the special drink. He may of casted a spell on them. The book Icabod has been trying to read might be the key of how to work the pig. I do not know how Gorgon shape shifted into santa claus because I do not recall him having powers. Does he have powers that I don’t remember except that he use to be an illuminator. Epictetus is being very foolish by letting Molech and his friends to Olton. He should be more wise and keep them out knowing what kind of kids they are. Meno is probally going to do something terrible to Trevor and there won’t be anyone to help him. I’ll talk to you later can’t wait to read the next chapter. Don’t tell the teacher but I might take a peek –SMILE

  75. Mortimus Says:

    Hi Gang,

I’m enjoying your posts. You’ve got some interesting thoughts on the story.

Things are about to get really exciting, you’ll soon see!

Hey, I’d like your opinions about Justin’s concept drawing for the second book. Just click on “Home” on the top right and you’ll see it.

Under the drawing there’s a place for you to click to post a comment. I’ll tell Justin to check your comments out. Who knows, maybe he’ll incorporate your ideas!

  76. kiwijojo Says:

I loved Ch. 14-17!!! I think that, Mortimus, you had some of your best work there! The best part is how Meno and his friends get tricked by “santa” and they now are in the same place w/ Maggie and Trevor again! I LOVE YOUR BOOK and it is the only thing I look forward to doing at night, reading it.

  77. Mortimus Says:

Gosh! Thanks. I’m blushing, can you tell?

  78. vena003 Says:

The cover looked really cool….. all the baskets tell that I think Trevor isn’t going to go home, he’s going to help other kids, and he’s going to use the birds mentioned in chapter 28 to help!!!!

P.S. Morty, what gave you the idea in chapters 24-28 about the birds, and the burning man?

  79. 1alkat Says:

    I love the cover Morty!!
even though I haven’t got to the chapter The Fay Brand, I still think it’s sooooo cool. I think that Trevor isn’t gonna go home after all. I think that Trevor will go to the pantry and help save the other kids with Zephyr and Maggie.

  80. hyesun815 Says:

    I like the cover Morty!!

I like the second one better than first one.

I think Trevor will fly because he wants to go home^^

  81. vena003 Says:

Hi guys! I don’t know about you guys but I can’t wait until all the other books come out.

Also, Mortimus, I was wondering, I know that Ragnarok is a Norse god , but, why did you pick that name?

  82. cuddlesshadow Says:

when did the bogeys last seen trevor was it at the tree

  83. cuddlesshadow Says:

love the book plus i cant wait till the next books come out either

  84. Mortimus Says:

Actually, Ragnarok is the Norse version of the end of the world — when the Norse gods are defeated by the monsters.

If you think about that idea it will give you an idea what that book will be about.

Also, go to the ‘home’ page of the blog to see the cover for the next book. It looks great. Post a comment to let Justin know what you think.

  85. godzillagirl Says:

Well I know that we’ve totally finished reading the book in all that, but I just wanted to say as a final note that Morti’s books are the BEST!!!!!!!!!
I hope the idea about having illustrations throughout the book happens. Dang, there were certain times I was really really really really confused.
Thank you for letting us read your book, and I can’t wait to read the rest of them!!!

P.S. I am done crying about evil Santa finally! LOL
